Venture capital risk managers do not belong to unions. Professional associations can be excellent resources for risk management professionals—providing everything from certification programs and publications, to networking events and career seminars. For example, the Global Association of Risk Professionals, which has more than 150,000 members in 195 countries, offers the financial risk manager credential, professional development classes and webinars, job listings at its Web site, networking opportunities via chapter events and at its annual Risk Management Convention, and other resources. The National Venture Capital Association is the leading trade organization of the U.S. venture capital industry, with more than 300 member firms. The Women’s Association of Venture and Equity and Women.VC are membership organizations that advocate to increase the number of women in the field (women are still vastly underrepresented in the VC industry as compared to their percentage of the U.S. population). Other helpful organizations include the American Risk and Insurance Association, Professional Risk Managers’ International Association, Public Risk Management Association, RIMS—The Risk Management Society, and RMA-The Risk Management Association.
