Nearly 2.7 million people work as wage and salary employees of grocery stores, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2015, there were over 38,015 supermarkets in the United States with more than $2 million in annual sales, according to Progressive Grocer magazine. They are located across the nation, in towns and cities. Some are part of a large chain such as Kroger, Wal-Mart Superstores, and Safeway. Other stores are part of smaller chains or are independently owned.
