More than 1.9 million people work as stock clerks. About 69 percent of stock clerks work in retail and general merchandise; approximately 11 percent work in wholesale firms; and the remainder work in hospitals, factories, government agencies, schools, and other organizations. Nearly all sales-floor stock clerks are employed in retail establishments, especially supermarkets and department stores.
