Private Investigators

Outlook

Private investigators and detectives will experience average employment growth of about 5 percent through 2024, according to the Department of Labor. Cybercrime is one area of growth in the field and private investigators will be needed to help solve cases of identity theft, credit card fraud, Internet scams, and financial and insurance fraud. The legal services industry will need private investigators to tackle these and other issues. Companies and individuals will also continue to need private investigators to do background checks on people. Competition is keen in the private investigation field because there are so many qualified people who do this kind of work, including people with solid backgrounds in law enforcement and in federal and military fields. The best opportunities will be entry-level positions in detective agencies. Those with related work experience, strong knowledge of computers, and good research and interviewing skills will have the best job prospects.
