Medical Scientists

Employment for medical scientists is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all careers through 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Those with both an M.D. and a Ph.D. will have the best job prospects. The DOL reports that a significant portion of the employment growth for medical scientists will be fueled by the expansion of the biotechnology industry as well as the continuing development of prescription drugs, and research into illnesses like AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. Also, higher population density and the growth of frequent international travel will contribute to the spread of existing diseases, and possibly new ones. Medical scientists will be needed to help develop treatments and medicines for these illnesses.
