Locomotive Engineers

Outlook

Employment for locomotive engineers is expected to decline through 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Despite this prediction, the DOL says that "job opportunities should be favorable for railroad workers." Many openings will arise from the need to replace the large number of workers who are expected to retire in the next decade. Another factor that is fueling employment growth is the recent federal legislation that has raised the number of hours engineers must rest between work shifts (which has created a need for more workers to cover shifts).
