Earnings for interpreters vary depending on experience, skills, number of languages used, and employers. In government, trainee interpreters generally begin at the GS-5 rating, earning from $28,262 to $36,740 in 2016. Those with a college degree can start at the higher GS-7 level, earning from $35,009 to $45,512. With an advanced degree, trainees begin at the GS-9 ($42,823 to $55,666), GS-10 ($47,158 to $61,306), or GS-11 level ($51,811 to $67,354).
