Home Stagers

Over the years, people have sought to improve the "look" of their homes in order to increase their chances of selling their properties, but home staging as an occupational field did not develop until the early 1970s. Barb Schwarz, a real estate agent in Bellevue, Washington, identified a need for buyers to improve the look of their homes to prepare them for sale. She created the career of home staging and developed educational, certification, and professional standards for the field. In 1999, Schwarz founded the International Association of Home Staging Professionals and and continues to serve as the association’s chairwoman.

In the last decade, the career of home stager has become increasingly popular as home sellers seek to gain an extra edge in an increasingly competitive real estate market.
