Geriatric Nurses

Unions and Associations

Some geriatric nurses may be members of the American Federation of Government Employees; American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees; National Nurses United; and other unions. Geriatric nurses may join professional associations such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American Geriatrics Society, Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association, and the National Gerontological Nursing Association. The AACN and the American Nurses Credentialing Center offer certification. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing represents more than 780 member schools of nursing; these schools offer a mix of baccalaureate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. Other useful organizations include the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing.
