Employment Prospects


Construction and building inspectors held about 91,480 jobs in 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. About 51 percent were employed by government agencies, with most working in local government. An additional 32 percent were employed in the architectural, engineering, and related services industry. Inspectors employed at the federal level work for such agencies as the Department of Defense or the Departments of Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture, and the Interior. Approximately 10 percent of construction and building inspectors are self employed.
