According to the U.S. Department of Labor, continuous mining machine operators, a specialized coal mining occupation, employed in the coal mining industry had mean annual earnings of $50,830 in 2015. Those with considerable experience can receive even higher earnings. The top 10 percent earned $73,880 annually and the lowest 10 percent earned $32,480 per year. The National Mining Association recorded the average annual earnings for a coal miner as $83,600 as of 2015.
