Employment Prospects

Employers

Motion picture studios, production companies, independent producers, and documentary filmmakers all employ DPs, either as salaried employees or as freelancers. The U.S. Department of Labor reports camera operators held about 20,060 jobs in 2015. About 8,890 worked in radio and television broadcasting, and 6,870 worked in motion picture and video industries in 2015. Most freelancers are responsible for finding their own projects to work on, but a few are represented by agents who solicit work for them.
