Employment for mechanical engineering technicians, including automotive engineering technicians, is expected to grow by 3 percent through 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, which is slower than average for all careers. The automotive industry is strongly linked to the state of the U.S. economy, and there are typically more employment opportunities when the economy is strong. There will continue to be jobs for automotive engineering technicians, however, due to employees leaving the field for other positions or retiring from the profession. Also, technicians who have strong knowledge of computer-aided design software and the latest technologies, and who are flexible to relocate for work, will have the advantage in the job market.
