Earnings for astrobiologists vary extensively based on the type and size of their employer and the individual's level of education and experience. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) does not provide salary information for astrobiologists, but it does report that the median salary for all biological scientists was $75,150 in May 2015. Salaries ranged from less than $41,740 to more than $112,820. Other jobs closest to astrobiologists that the DOL provides information on are biochemists and biophysicists, who earned salaries that ranged from $44,640 or less to $153,810 or more in May 2015. General biological scientists working for the federal government earned a mean salary of $78,500. Scientists employed by NASA earned starting salaries that ranged from $33,151 to $44,034 in 2016.
