Acquisitions Librarians

History

Acquisitions and collection development has existed ever since the first library was created thousands of years ago. Early librarians acquired books, manuscripts, maps, and other materials to augment their existing collections. Today, acquisitions librarians acquire not only books but periodicals, CD-ROMs, music, videos, films, electronic downloads, art, photographs, and other resources.

The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, was formed in 1957 to serve the professional needs of acquisitions librarians and related professionals.
