Industry Outlook

The outlook for employment in the chemicals industry is improving after several years of decline. According to the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the American chemistry business expanded by 3.5 percent in 2015. The ACC predicted a nearly 3 percent increase in domestic chemical production in 2016, and a 4.4 percent increase in 2017. The ACC also foresees annual increases of chemical production of 4 percent until 2020, outpacing the growth of the overall U.S. economy. The growth will be due primarily to new capacity that is coming online the next few years, as well as new chemical production projects that were announced in 2010, but as of 2016 are only about 30 percent complete.
