At O’Melveny we strive to create an environment that makes us not only better lawyers but also better people. We do that by attracting individuals of diverse backgrounds and experience whose voices push us to grow and innovate. And we offer dynamic, creative attorneys the opportunity to perform cutting-edge legal work that serves both industry-leading companies and the communities we call home.

Our culture sets us apart. When clients look for a law firm that genuinely cares about their businesses, and when lawyers look for a law firm that genuinely cares about its people, they turn to O’Melveny. Those relationships help keep us near the top of The American Lawyer’s various contests and surveys year after year.

O’Melveny recognizes that every lawyer’s trajectory is different, that there is no “one-size-fits-all” career plan. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to help lawyers customize their careers according to their own professional goals and personal needs. We offer a confidential in-house career coach, skill-building and leadership training, and a transparent environment that promotes mentorship through biannual upward reviews. Our award-winning flexible work program, CustOMMize, encourages lawyers to explore reduced workload, remote work, flex time, sabbatical, and job-sharing options. We also provide new-parent transitional coaching and back-up care for children and aging parents.

In our 130-year history, O’Melveny has gone from a two-man shop in downtown Los Angeles handling Spanish ranchland disputes to an international powerhouse with 15 offices across three continents. What hasn’t changed is our dedication to community service and pro bono work. Our founder Henry O’Melveny and his son Jack O’Melveny, who helped establish the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles in 1929, made this one of the Firm’s defining principles. Former US Secretary of State Warren Christopher, our late Chairman, embedded that commitment in our core values of uncompromising excellence, distinctive leadership, and superior citizenship. Today, more than 70 percent of our lawyers participate in pro bono projects and annually devote roughly 65,000 hours—which we treat the same as commercial billable hours—to those efforts. All attorneys are encouraged to spend at least 50 hours per year on pro bono work; at a minimum they’re expected to record no less than 20 hours annually.
