About Keker, Van Nest & Peters LLP
Headquartered in San Francisco and just over 100 attorneys strong, Keker, Van Nest, & Peters is known for handling major intellectual property disputes for some of the country's leading names in technology. The firm also has a reputation for unleashing experienced trial attorneys skilled in everything from white collar criminal defense to commercial litigation.
Founded in 1978 by two Yale Law School colleagues, Keker, Van Nest, & Peters is firm with a California base and an international reach. According to the firm, Keker attorneys pride themselves on handling “make or break” cases with finesse—including when those cases end up in the courtroom—thanks to their legal team with a strategic courtroom mindset in addition to “book smarts.” The firm was the first to win The American Lawyer’s “Litigation Boutique of the Year” award thanks to the firm’s continuous stream of high-stakes litigation victories.
Protecting Patents, Athletes, and Attorneys
Keker specializes in intellectual property, professional liability (particularly law firms), consumer and class action suits, general contract and commercial litigation, antitrust law, white collar crime, and appellate cases. The firm's clients range from individuals to worldwide corporate kings like Genentech Inc., Comcast Cable Communications, HTC, Intel, Medtronic, and the McKesson Corporation.
There is no shortage of impressive matters on Keker’s resume. The firm represented Google in the “smartphone trial of the century” when Oracle Corporation brought forward a $6 billion charge in patent and copyright infringement against Google. Keker was able to get six of the seven patent infringement claims ruled invalid even before the trial began. In another high-profile matter, the firm successfully defended McKesson Corporation in a False Claims Act case—the trial stemming from related claims was pegged by the National Law Journal as one of the five most significant that year. In another case, Keker attorneys persuaded an appellate judge that the U.S. government had violated Major League Baseball players’ Fourth Amendment rights when authorities seized urine samples and drug testing records in a steroid investigation. And as lead counsel for HTC, the firm took on Apple, the goliath of all tech goliaths, in a patent infringement case after Apple accused their client of violating ten Apple patents.
Keker’s trial lawyers use their formidable skills for a lot of good, and the firm holds pro bono work in the same regard as its billable practices. Some recent pro bono matters include the defense of Native Alaskan and environmental advocacy groups in a case regarding oil drilling; a California class of immigrants who have been, or will be, mandatorily detained, with the outcome essentially blocking mandatory detention in California; habeus corpus clients, earning them freedom from sentences based on wrongful convictions; and a school district against a California Proposition 209 challenge to its diversity plan—and this is just a small sampling of the pro bono matters Keker has taken on.
