 3. Pro Bono

Latin America Refugee Project

Jones Day has a longstanding commitment to fighting for access to the Rule of Law for refugees. In 2014, Jones Day responded to unprecedented need at the U.S. southern border by launching a project to assist unaccompanied children and mothers with children.  We deepened our commitment in March 2017 by launching the Laredo Project.  Through the Project, the Firm has assisted thousands of refugees, mostly women, fleeing physical, sexual, and psychological violence in their home countries and seeking asylum and similar relief in the U.S.

Our Laredo Project operates year round, and is physically based out of a local Laredo hotel, akin to a traditional “remote trial site.”  We staff the project each week with a rotating complement of volunteer lawyers and volunteer interpreters, who work in teams to screen cases for possible representation and provide pro se advice to those whom we cannot represent.  After an on-the-ground team recommends a migrant for representation and that migrant is engaged as a client, we form a remote trial team to brief and try their case before U.S. Immigration Court.

Jones Day continues to provide legal services to migrants detained or released into the U.S. who are fleeing persecution in their home countries and seeking asylum in the U.S.  Now, however, migrants are subject to the Migrant Protection Protocols (“MPP”).

Under MPP, also known as the Remain in Mexico Policy, migrants seeking asylum or other fear-based relief in the U.S. who either present at the border or are apprehended near the border are returned to Mexico.  They then await their immigration court proceedings in Mexico, rather than in the U.S.  The migrants receive a Notice to Appear in U.S. Immigration Court on a specific future date and, on that date, they present again at the U.S.-Mexico border, where they are brought to an MPP Court on the U.S. side of the border for their hearing.

MPP proceedings are expedited.  They take place in a series of tents, shipping container buildings, and temporary hard sided buildings, where hearings are conducted via videoconference with judges across the U.S.

The migrants’ presence in Mexico and expedited court appearances across the border in the U.S. present a number of logistical hurdles that make securing legal assistance difficult.  Thus, without Jones Day’s involvement, the migrants we serve would almost certainly have no access to legal counsel in pursuing the protections of U.S. asylum laws.

*After monitoring the COVID developments closely, we made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Jones Day 1L Diversity Conference. While we were disappointed, we believe it was the only prudent decision as the safety of the students, our lawyers, staff, and clients is paramount.

5. Associate Opportunities, Training & Development

New Lawyers Group and Academy

As with all relationships, we believe it takes some time for an individual to find his or her personal fit within the Firm and passion for a specific practice. That uncertainty and the value of experiencing a variety of assignments and practices during that first year at the Firm led Jones Day to establish the New Lawyers Group. It guarantees exposure to a wide variety of lawyers, practice areas, styles of practice, and the experience of practicing within our culture of collaboration and mutual support.

One of the high points of the new lawyer year is the New Lawyers Academy in Washington, DC. Each fall, new lawyers assemble from our more than 40 offices around the world to meet and network with each other. Firm leaders, partner, and associates teach the new lawyers about Jones Day's culture, history, organization, and achievements and lead substantive and interactive training sessions.
